Set in the summer of 1987 in Denver, Colorado, 'Shoplifters of the World' follows the story of four friends - Dean, Chris, Billy, and Sheila - who are die-hard fans of the British band The Smiths. The friends are devastated when they hear the news that The Smiths have broken up. To cope with their grief and frustration, Dean decides to take drastic action. He visits the local radio station where he holds the DJ, Full Metal Mickey, hostage at gunpoint. Dean forces Mickey to play nothing but The Smiths' music all night long as a tribute to the band. As the night progresses, the friends embark on a wild and emotional journey, each dealing with their own personal struggles and desires. Chris, who is secretly in love with Sheila, tries to confess his feelings to her while dealing with his own insecurities. Billy, who is the rebellious and outspoken member of the group, finds himself confronting his troubled family dynamics. Sheila, a free-spirited artist, grapples with her own identity and aspirations. Meanwhile, Mickey, the DJ, begins to understand the depth of the band's impact on the youth and the power of music to connect people. As the night unfolds, the group experiences a rollercoaster of emotions, revelations, and unexpected connections, ultimately finding solace and a sense of belonging through the music of The Smiths. 'Shoplifters of the World' is a nostalgic and heartfelt tribute to the transformative power of music, the complexity of human relationships, and the universal need for hope and connection in times of uncertainty.
